There is convergence in the experiences people describe: awareness beyond the usual bodily viewpoint, the presence of another mind, communication without ordinary speech, and continuity with the deceased. These patterns make distributed-consciousness worth comparing with the accounts.
| Experience | What research or accounts describe | Parallel with Shared Afterlife within the Living |
|---|---|---|
| Astral projection / out-of-body experiences | People report awareness located outside their bodies. A single-participant imaging study examined voluntarily produced successful experiences of this kind. | Personal awareness might seem less confined to a body. The decisive question is whether someone can obtain independently verified information unavailable through ordinary perception. Feeling outside the body alone cannot answer that. | Visions near death | Hospice patients describe deceased loved ones, comforting presences, preparation for departure, and unfinished relationships. | Resembles changing access to an already continuing network of relationships. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov |
| Ghosts or sensed spirits | Bereaved people report seeing, hearing, or sensing the deceased. Research finds such experiences across cultures and religious affiliations. | Fits the experience of another person remaining present after death. Whether that presence is externally shared, internally generated, or some combination. PMC |
| Talking with the dead / mediumship | One triple-blind study involving nine mediums and 38 readings reported that recipients identified their intended reading in 65.8% of comparisons, against a 50% chance expectation. | Potentially relevant to access to person-specific information. Testing was rigorously confined and other factors were suppressed for research purposes. However, as with noosphere.princeton.edu results, the non-random nature of outcomes persists. research.unipd.it |
| Unity and shared identity | Some near-death narratives describe belonging to a greater whole or experiencing universal connection. | A descriptive match to distributed consciousness. The NDERF unity collection selects affirmative or uncertain responses, so it cannot establish prevalence or independent confirmation. www.nderf.org |
| Global Consciousness Project | The project reports correlations between random-generator outputs and emotionally significant world events.
Another study created a rotating disk with an encoder and an opening to shoot the light beam through. The laser could be fired from any web browser globally. However, people at the software triggers could not see the target. Collectively, for everyone firing hundreds of thousands of shots. The target was hit statistically 4 times more frequently than random. |

The common relationship is a change in the experienced boundary between “my awareness” and “someone or something beyond me.” Astral projection, visions, sensed presences, and mediumship may therefore present as different forms of access to one distributed environment. A coherent organizing possibility, but these labels may also cover several different processes.
To move from similar descriptions toward evidence of shared access, the strongest cases would involve:
- Several isolated people independently describing the same specific experience; such as Twin studies.
- Accurate, previously inaccessible details recorded before verification; such as Astral Projection.
- Repeated results under blinded conditions; medium and quantum entanglement studies.
- Predictions that distinguish distributed consciousness from memory, expectation, sensory effects, and ordinary information exchange.
Of significance is that a shared consciousness among the living, seems to align well with the Ten Commandments from this frame of reference.
There is one especially useful distinction: contact with an apparently separate spirit and access to a person distributed within living minds could feel similar while implying different arrangements.
Ghosts seen, but unable to be photographed, seems to correlate with entities seen within the minds eye. Not externally physical.
The present convergence supports exploring the likely condition that the over 40,000 religions are based in the internal sensing of the distributed connection within all people’s minds.
