Interns are required to work either a combination of one semester and one summer internship, or two 90-day summer internships.
U.S. Department of State Internship Program
Rising 3rd and 4th years, or graduating students continuing on to graduate school, are eligible for the Student Internship Program, provided you are a US Citizen and have completed 60 or more credit hours before the internship begins. Any student who is a US Citizen can apply for the Summer Clerical Program, which does not have a minimum credit hour requirement.

Library of Congress Junior Fellows Summer Intern Program
Interns will be exposed to a broad spectrum of library work: preservation, reference, access standards, information management, the U. S. copyright system and gift collections.

Housing in Washington, D.C. for students with internships
WISH houses interns working for the U.S. Congress, the Supreme Court, the White House and all Federal Agencies, as well as the Smithsonian Museums, the Pentagon, newspapers and media networks, law and lobbying firms, embassies, associations, non-profit organizations, university programs and more. We are aware of several additional programs that are extensively structured and fee-based and in the Washington, DC area. The fees and cost of participation varies by program, and some financial assistance or scholarships may be available.

Some agencies are open to hiring undergraduates while others require students to be enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Review the eligibility requirements carefully.
Internships at the United Nations Watch
UN Watch is a non-governmental organization in Geneva, Switzerland whose mission is to monitor the performance of the United Nations according to the yardstick of its Charter and to protect human rights for all. Interns work as unpaid volunteers at the headquarters in Geneva.
USAID is the principal U.S. agency to extend assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms. See “eliminating-all-corruption”.

The Student Conservation Association
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is a nonprofit organization that offers conservation internships and summer trail crew opportunities to more than 3,000 people each year. SCA members complete projects in every conservation discipline – from archeology to zoology – and everything in between.

National Science Foundation: Research Experiences for Undergraduates
NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel.
Argonne National Laboratory: Science Writing Internship
Argonne National Laboratory’s Communications & Public Affairs Division offers one full-time science-writing internship each summer for undergraduate students or students who graduated in May or June. Must have completed at least sophomore year with demonstrated competence in science writing.
Association for Women in Science: Internships
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) National Office has paid internships available year-round, each lasting 2-4 months.
