Start with a familiar situation. An experienced antenna technician can identify faults but cannot safely climb towers. A manager who evaluates only climbing ability overlooks the technician’s ability to mentor, troubleshoot and improve equipment design.
Notice the relationship
Observe task demands → recognize distinct capabilities → redesign or delegate safely → record contribution → convey earned respect → expand responsibility and future opportunity.
Trust should be specific to demonstrated work, not a judgment of human worth. Self-respect lets workers communicate both confidence and limits. Disdain for one limitation can conceal knowledge, experience and additional resources.
Ask yourself: Which capability becomes visible after the job is redesigned?
Explore the deeper PA relationships, modifiers, applications and source notes
Capabilities are context-dependent combinations of practiced skills, knowledge, physical capacities, judgment, relationships and accessible tools that enable contributions. A person’s capability cannot be inferred from age, disability, demeanor or one result.
Four PA dimensions
Critical Reasoning: evidence use, technical skill, learning and uncertainty. Emotional Acumen: confidence calibration, perseverance, stress response and openness to assistance. Social Acumen: listening, mentoring, delegation, responsibility and coordination. Physical Health: functional capacity, fatigue, recovery, accessibility and task safety. These interact in each human state.
Organization and environmental modifiers
Required competence differs among classrooms, clinical teams, research laboratories, farms, community organizations and communications infrastructure. Environmental constraints include credentials, schedules, equipment, safety systems, funding and available collaborators. Evaluate task-specific requirements rather than a person-global ranking.
Compensation and augmentation
An experienced antenna specialist unable to climb a tower can diagnose problems, mentor others, subcontract licensed field work, use remote monitoring or redesign systems. These alternatives modify the capability–environment fit and may create additional resources through skill transfer.
Recursive pathway
Task requirement → capability and access review → choose training, delegation or redesign → supported contribution → evidence of outcomes → changed confidence, trust and responsibilities → additional opportunity. Watch for exclusion if only those with initial access receive development opportunities.
Evaluation
Record directly observed task performance, conditions, required supports, counterexamples, changes over time and uncertain attribution. Respect, trust and perceived competence are useful relational approximations, not total measures of personal worth.
